Androgenetic Alopecia (Male/Female Pattern Hair Loss)
The most common type of hair loss in women and men, of genetic and hormonal origin.
Androgenetic alopecia is the most common type of hair loss in both women and men. It develops through genetic predisposition and the effect of hormones. In men it usually begins with recession of the frontal hairline and thinning at the crown, while in women it tends to appear as diffuse thinning and loss of volume, most noticeable over the mid-scalp.
In this condition the hair follicles gradually shrink and begin to produce increasingly fine, short and weak hair strands. If left untreated, hair density can decrease over time. However, it is possible to slow the loss and preserve density with appropriate treatment started before the follicles are lost entirely.
Detailed history, clinical examination, trichoscopy and, where needed, hair analysis have an important place in the diagnosis of androgenetic alopecia. These assessments determine the type and severity of the hair loss and allow the response to treatment to be followed regularly.
Treatment is planned according to the patient's age and sex and the duration and severity of the loss. Today, topical and systemic medications — sometimes alone and, in suitable patients, combined with methods such as PRP, mesotherapy, microneedling and Tricopat — can achieve successful results.
