Dermoscopy and Digital Mole Mapping

Detailed dermoscopic examination of moles and objective follow-up through digital records.

Moles can change in number, shape and colour throughout life. Most moles are entirely benign. However, changes that develop in a mole over time, or newly appearing moles, may be an early sign of the skin cancer known as melanoma. Regular assessment of moles is therefore of great importance for early diagnosis, particularly in people at risk.

Dermoscopy uses a special magnification system to examine structures within moles that cannot be seen with the naked eye, and has become an indispensable part of mole assessment today. It allows moles to be evaluated in far greater detail: moles with suspicious features can be identified, unnecessary surgical procedures can be avoided, and the right moment to remove a mole can be determined.

Digital mole mapping is an advanced follow-up method in which standardised whole-body photographs and dermoscopic images are recorded together. The location of existing moles is documented, and at regular check-ups any changes in existing moles, newly appearing moles and suspicious dermoscopic findings are assessed objectively by comparison with previous records.

Mole mapping with digital dermoscopy is one of the most advanced methods available today for assessing and monitoring moles. Regular follow-up allows suspicious changes to be noticed early and treatment to be planned in good time where necessary.
