Botox
An effective botulinum toxin treatment for underarm and palm sweating.
Botox is an effective treatment method that has been used safely for many years in the treatment of excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), particularly of the underarms and palms.
During treatment, botulinum toxin is applied with very fine needles to the skin in the area of excessive sweating. By temporarily blocking the substances released from the nerve endings that stimulate the sweat glands, it markedly reduces sweating.
The effect of treatment usually begins within 3–7 days and reaches its peak within about 1–2 weeks. In most patients, sweating is markedly reduced, and the effect achieved lasts on average 4–6 months. When the effect wears off, treatment can be safely repeated.
The procedure is completed quickly in an outpatient setting, and the patient can return to daily life immediately. Underarm applications are usually well tolerated, while for palm applications a topical anaesthetic cream — or, in suitable patients, regional anaesthesia methods — can be applied beforehand to reduce pain.
Botox is a safe treatment method when applied by experienced physicians. It is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding. In addition, because it should not be used in certain neuromuscular conditions, a detailed assessment before the procedure is important.
